Sunshine, blue skies, the roar of the wind in his face with Lane’s arms wrapped tight around his waist as his chopper roared down the highway. Ash couldn’t help but grin. After the horrors of the night before, today was damned near perfect, despite the upcoming meeting with Bebe’s informant.

Even better, Jag was gone for the day, so Ash hadn’t had to come up with an excuse for bringing Lane with him. The bartender had said the gang leader had taken off earlier that morning and wasn’t returning until that night. Something about finding a missing link.

Whatever the reason, Ash felt like a weight had been lifted off him. Jag ruled through intimidation and Ash had never realized the toll it took on him to subjugate himself to his leader’s cruelty until recently.

They veered off the interstate and headed toward a diner on East Grant Road. The place was small and off the beaten path, perfect for hiding out and telling secrets. Plus, the food was awesome. Their slogan, “Just like Mama makes”, was no lie. He hadn’t tasted pancakes and waffles that good since his own mom had made him breakfast years ago. Ash gestured for Lane to slide into the booth first then he followed, meeting Carlos’s gaze. If the guy’s information in any way jeopardized the case or the lives entrusted to Ash, then Carlos had good reason to be nervous.

Ash adjusted his vest to cover the Glock holstered at his back then leaned his forearms on the table. “Talk to me.”

Carlos glanced around and sipped his ice water. “You don’t mess around, do you?”

“Never.” The guy’s fear was palpable, and Ash used it to his advantage. “You can tell me here or you can tell me out in the foothills. Your choice.”

Lane tensed beside Ash but remained silent. Ash had warned the guy before they’d left, and Lane had promised to sit still and shut up. So far, he’d kept that promise. Of course, they’d only been here a few minutes.

Carlos stared back at Ash, a slight tremor running through his slim body. The kid couldn’t have been more than twenty-two, maybe twenty-three. The fact his older brother,
